CSC offers students a variety of paths to explore the theater industry. Our NextGen Teen Leadership Program gives students who are seriously considering a career in theater behind-the-scenes experience Off-Broadway. Teen Takeovers offer middle school and high school students discounted tickets to attend our mainstage productions. After-school students gain experience in the theater through Shakespeare workshops cohosted by Manhattan Youth.
For teens with a passion for theater, strong leadership skills, and a desire to learn all aspects of professional performing arts, CSC offers a unique opportunity to be a vital part of an acclaimed Off-Broadway company.
NextGen members are the leaders of the next generation of artists and audiences. Members participate in workshops, get to go behind-the-scenes, develop business skills, and gain insight through interaction with full-time staff and meetings with theater professionals.
The NextGen program is entirely free of charge for participants thanks to the generosity of CSC’s donors. CSC is grateful to Con Edison for their generous sponsorship of our educational programs.
How to Join NextGen
NextGen applications for our 2020-2021 season are open now through September 1. Apply to be a part of NextGen through our online application. Please read the application requirements. Only complete applications will be considered.
CSC NextGen encourages all eligible high school students with an interest in theater to apply. CSC values diversity and provides equal opportunities to all programming applicants without regard to race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy and gender identity), national origin, political affiliation, sexual orientation, marital status, disability, genetic information, age, parental status, military service, or other non-merit factor. For full consideration, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Be enrolled in a high school (grades 9-12) at the start of the 2020-2021 school year
- Commit to the entire nine month program (September-May), with mandatory meetings twice a month on Mondays from 4:30pm to 6:00pm on Zoom
- Demonstrate leadership skills or potential and a desire to learn about all aspects of professional theater.
- Attend high school in the NYC/NJ area. Although sessions will be virtual for the first time ever this year, NextGen is designed to serve students in the local community. When the theater industry is able to reopen safely, we hope NextGen will be able to resume meeting in person. For that reason, applicants from outside this geographic range will not be considered.
Please contact our Education Coordinator, Marella Martin Koch at firstname.lastname@example.org with any questions.
NextGen members plan Teen Takeover performances for each CSC mainstage production. At these performances, NextGen members run the box office, usher, host the post-performance discussion, and oversee all aspects of the event.
Any middle and high school students may use code TEEN10 for $10 tickets* when booking tickets to Teen Takeover performances
*Tickets are subject to availability. Limit of 2 tickets per student (valid student ID required).
Since 2019, CSC has partnered with Manhattan Youth to provide high-quality after-school Shakespeare programs to middle school students across Manhattan, regardless of income. Learn more about their programs at https://www.manhattanyouth.org/
